Just a few years ago I caught the fish aquarium bug. After starting with a small 10 gallon freshwater tank, I now have multiple tanks, including a 29 gallon Biocube saltwater tank. My goal is provide some helpful information (and maybe some entertainment along the way) for anyone starting out in the hobby or even those just looking for some helpful tips to start and maintain fish tanks.
I hope to help folks directly, by answering any questions you may have and even taking requests for video guides and how-to's. Follow me on Twitter so we can keep in touch with what's going on in the world of aquariums! I hope you enjoy my videos, and remember to subscribe!

Portrait 5G Reef - Lighting Upgrade
The stock lighting on the Portrait tank is NOT made for coral growth...or coral survival for that matter. This is a nice, budget friendly upgrade with good features.

Fluval EVO 13.5g/52l - Adding a new fish!
So what do I A:do with my fish B: I have a shit load of sludge everywhere from the filter messing up after being super dirty and having to clean it and changing my filters also C: it's got stuff all over the glass. And my filter won't clean it bc it just sticks to the walls o. The outside of the filer bc it won't let it go up in the filter. Idk this video helped zero percent. I have no alsge in the tank also.
I stopped using it because I started losing fish and switched to Seachem Prime as it offers protection against toxic ammonia and more. I haven't lost any more fish since.
Thanks for this amazing info!!! 😎👍🏻👌🏼
The cheapest most foolproof sump ive ever seen consisted of a 5 gallon Lowes bucket, a hang-on filter sock holder, filter sock, and return pump. Excluding the return pump, the entire cost of the sump was less then $20. And it worked great.
how u the "fish tank guy" but you have rainbow gravel, fake neon plants, & terrible decore?
So you can add them, but be sure to also have the API test kit, so you cam keep track of the levels in the tank as time goes. I prefer to use Seachem Prime and stability. Prime converts ammonia, chlorine and chloramime into less toxic chemicals and stability helps Jumpstart a tanks cycling.. i use one full tiny bottle of the Seachem stability when starting a tank, it helps that BB get going! But also, lots of floating plants can help maintain the ammonia levels while the tank is 'fish in' cycling. ❤
There's really no quick and easy way to cycle a tank. It's either a long wait and easy or a short wait and difficult!!
@TheFishTankGuy Yeah thats so true 😅I guess quick is relative i have time perception issues, lol I think mine took about a month before levels stopped fluctuating, but now that I have tons of cycled media, making new tanks take about a week to stabilize. I do fish-in cycles, but I also keep hardy fish like endlers cause I'm new to the hobby overall. I've just been keeping for about a year and a half. Oh it did help me when I used leaf litter from a local stream for things like scud and copepods 🥰
I have a 55 gallon tank with 20 gold fish and 2 sucker fish. It is a new tank and not established. What do you recommend to add to the water for PH level control and de-chlorinate the tap water also how often to change the filter?
How new is the tank? Did you cycle the tank at all? If not, all of your fish are going to struggle and possibly die...I hope you did cycle first! As for what to add to the water, I swear by Tetra Aquasafe Plus!
What is on the side of the tank on the black wall? All those spots?
There is only one way I would ever be prepared to use Quickstart or Fritz zyme or stability, and add 2 fish the first day, and that is to do 2 x 40% water changes a day, everyday, for 3 weeks, and plant lots of plants from day1. Much easier just to let it cycle naturally. Getting established media is not without some risk. I have gotten sick fish from the local fish store on occasion. It is simply not possible for LFS to be entirely parasite free. And there is a far greater chance of getting a pathogen on a dirty sponge than on a store bought fish.
I actually came here after purchasing it, trying to figure out how to set the values and what they correspond to. For me the really useful part is at the end of the video 😊
What kind of anemone u have
I like API for the mostpart. Quickstart OR ANY other product like it, does nothing except buy you slightly more time...and I do mean slightly. Use it as a tool but NEVER depend on it. Unless you have a good ratio of live plants to each gallon, you will be doing alot of water changes throughout the nitrogen process. The only time Ive had to do zero water changes during the process is now, with my first planted tank with at least a 2 plant per gallon ratio. The plants did it all, and grew like they were infused with Co2. Plants are the very best filters which are key to a stable aquarium. First time Ive actually had 1.
This stuff is flawed and can be catastrophic in certain scenarios.....I found where it CANNOT be used. Fluval Stratum and alot of driftwood creates a naturally acidic PH....I ended up with snails in a plant shipment, and realized they need a neutral PH to fully function, so I used a little crushed coral to jack the PH up. Thankfully I had no fish at this time, as I did an experiment with Purigen. In less than 2 hours after putting it in my filter, it took a 6.8 ph and completely crashed it. Luckily snails seemed to handle that ok. If I had fish, it would had been much worse. Im not saying that its bad in all scenarios, but the moral of the story is....Dont jump on a bandwagon. Seachem did not put a distinct warning on their packaging about it, which is irresponsible of them. Before using any product, experiment with it separately first.
This video is great 👍 thanks.
Mine did not come with a powercord.😓
@1:52 I am pretty sure that hole above the nut should be the other way around for the cable to run to the back....but yeah....

I know I'm late to the party. Narrow the first spillway to tumble/rotate the macro👍👍👍
@3:18 I wanna see you do a 50g water change on this tank 😂😂😂
Hey now ! Quick question: Will the 10 gallon sump work with a 75 gallon saltwater tank ?
No one said the sicce .5. Gotta get the 1.0
Petco told me you need 40 gallons tank I guess thay want make money 💰 your aquarium size is good easy to maintain very nice video 🥰🥰🥰 I have 5 gallons 2 filter just pair clown fish after 2 week every thing is working great I am keep testing ammonia and nitrate feture I will change to 20 gallons tank small is good for learn
Thanks so much for the thorough review! Now is there anything you recommend to use besides the filter because I’ve heard the current is so strong it pushes fish around but I’m not sure. I am getting a betta fish soon and I’m ordering it soon
Honestly, if you use the stock pump that comes with the tank, I think you'll be OK. It's more powerful than most Betta tanks, but shouldn't cause any problems.
@@TheFishTankGuy Hi bro thanks for the reply! Also i was considering just using the carbon filter cartridges but im gonna have a planted tank and alot of people just say ditch them and do something else thats better. Does it really matter what i do?
@@DfryOfficial Have you ever had a planted tank before?
@@TheFishTankGuy No, I have only had one other tank before but it was only for a week and it was a glofish tank with 3 tetras and a cory but the tank started leaking so i brought all the stuff back to petco and started over and did more research and decided im gonna do a marineland 5 gallon portrait with a betta and a couple snails and have a more natural planted tank besides all the artificial and fake colorful rocks because i didnt like it too much. I have the tank setup no water just the tank. ready for aquascaping and extra stuff like plants, substrate and rocks
@@DfryOfficial that's awesome! My recommendation, since it's your first tank and also a 5g,would be set it up with no live plants/soil at first. Love plants require frequent water changes and more diligence, which is not easy when first starting out. Of course it's up to you though! Good luck with your fish tank journey!
I have 5 gallons starting kit for trying and learn
I would recommend starting with a 10 or 20g tank for saltwater. 5g is hard to maintain as it's easy for levels and things to change quickly. I don't want a small tank to discourage you from getting into the hobby!
I just picked up the 5 gallon spec v freshwater tank for 20$ I'm Gonna use it for saltwater
Be careful, 5g saltwater tanks are considered to be expert level tanks!
@@TheFishTankGuy yes I've kept saltwater in the past 125 gallon!! I just started sharing my videos too of the journey
@@things4yougaming723 that's awesome, I'll check out your channel! Good luck on your new tank!
what level did you drill them measured form the top? And are they on the same level or is the our a bit higher? thanks
Ok so what is the bacteria called that needs to be established and can it be purchased and added to my freshwater aquarium? I've heard that certain beneficial bacterias in a bottle need to be refrigerated, is that a better product?
I have one of these for my betta and I love it. The only con is the light is no good for growing plants. I had to buy a light. Water changes are a breeze.
If your refrigerator has a thermometer you can just put it in there for a few minutes.
any updates on the tank?
I’m so confused on the filtration do I keep the carbon filter or sub it with more sponge ? And do I put in media?
What I did was keep the spong filter and took the carbon filter and cut out the blue filter pad, I then took a sheet of polish pad filter material and cut it to size to fit in the now empty carbon filter frame. It basically acts as a mini filter sock. I also hung a mini resin bag in the back chamber. As long as you replace the pad every few days abd perform a 2 gal water change weekly they system remains very stable
So a little bit of advice about the pump upgrade. At full power it will over pressure the elbows and pop them apart causing water to go everywhere. Turn the flow dial all the way from + to - and everything will stay together and you will still get a huge increase in flow from the stock pump. Im also upgrading the nozel to the IM spin stream universal nozel to improve random flow in the tank without having to add a powerhead.
*update* I replaced the flaired outlet with the innovative Marine spin stream for the ability to get random flow without having to add a powerhead to the tank. With this upgrade, I was able to crank the upgraded pump to max output and remove one of the elbows, allowing for maxim random flow in the tank!
Temperature you forgot
Straight hot water
Had exactly the same experience. About to contact API now and will give them the link to this video too. Be interested to know an update on whether you ever recieved a kit that worked.
I have no issues sliding the lid under the filter cover
Thank you for sharing this! I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. What added confusion is I accidentally added some warmer water to aquarium, so I expected the watee to be a bit warmer. But then the temperature never went down. Once I realized that the water temperature seemed to be coolee than what thrme thermometer was reading I figured there might be something wrong with the thermometer itself. Turns out it was off by 4 degrees, which makes sense because it kept showing 84F when i had the heater set to 80F. Poor fishy had to go through so much messing around with the temperature. Wah.
lol these prices, if only you knew how bad things would get..
I agree...it's rough out there now. I should do an updated version of this video, it may be time. However, that would require me to buy most of the stuff I highlight in the video, LOL....
I'm just not a big fan of the manufactured live rock and white base rocks. They're either too uniformly purple and/or too uniformly porous. I do miss the authentic live rocks with their inconsistencies in color and shapes. I should've stocked up on live rocks and lace rocks when I had a chance.
Love the videos and I’m building a tower for a quarantine system myself. Word to the wise do not order from reefcreators, total scam website now that will not ship product.
Does anyone have this tank and keep cherry shrimp in it? I saw some people said to put some in to help keep the back clean but im worried they are not gonna survive getting back there
What do you think the flow rate of the pump is?
This was the best video I've seen on the tank because the filter analysis.
I think that's not an intake on the top but a skimmer.
I do 10% every Friday to prevent problems
Is there any update?
Freshwater tanks are as complicated as you make them. The main factors imo are really good lighting, good substrate, and flow. Heavily planted with easy plants and low fish load you could go 3-6 months with no water changes and only do top offs and large 50% water changes to avoid old tank syndrome and replenish certain minerals/dilute saturation of others and whatnot. overall it's more about setting yourself up for success by setting up a tank according to the type of maintenance you want to do.
Thank you for the video....I have had this tank for a few years and the white part is now completely covered in green/dark algae that is hard to get off with a sponge meant for glass. Has anyone found a tool to get the algae off of the white plastic?
How many pounds of dry rocks is recommended for this fluval evo 13.5?
